Blogorrah.com - the start of empire building with “very few overheads”
10
June 29th, 2006Blogorrah, Ireland, Media, irishblogsSo, we were right,
the Irish "culture, media news, gossip - and whatever you’re having yourself" blog, Blogorrah.com, is trying to copy Gawker.com (ok, so it wouldn’t take a intellect to guess such).
More importantly, they’re trying to copy Gawker Media, reports the Sunday Times (vie Blogorrah.com). From VIP magazine to dog mag publisher, John Ryan, told the Times “The beauty of it is that there are very few overheads”.And we do mean copy, well in the inspired way, the design is more then just similar to Gawker.com. The design is copied; the method of news aggregation with witty comments is copied.
Even thought they take the piss with them, Blogorrah.com is obsessed with photo call shots of Irish models in and around St Stephen’s Green, and then there are ‘celebrity’ and socialite photographs. Now where did they copy that from? A bit of Gawker, a bit of Defamer, or just VIP magazine?
We’ll keep reading and viewing, if only there was more reading then viewing to do. Just go easy on McDowell, he’s a bit stressed out at the moment.

I don’t care if it’s a copy, I quite like it. Hopefully it will improve a bit, but the ridiculing of photoshoots and the Social Dublin blog is great. Ireland needs more homegrown online media of good quality.
-
Don’t get me wrong, it’s just they rely a bit too much on the photos they’re complaining about. Anyway, the photos been published one way or another is just their function.

It’ll be interesting to see how many of their items end up being puffed up to appear in Metro / Herald AM and eventually all the other newspapers.
So many of the human interest and “Hey isn’t that crazy!?” stories that appear on Sky News Ireland, TV3 News and even these days RTE, the Irish Times, etc., have their genesis in sites like Boing Boing, blogs, discussion boards (e.g. Archiseek lately) and, more generally, news aggregators like Google and Yahoo! News. Lazy journalists. -
I’ve heard of the Archiseek one a few times (personally I’ve only read that site a few times out of personal interest), it can’t be all negative that journalists are listening to more voices and a wider view point.

Blogs, Begorrah and Ireland
I have mentioned before that MySpace is a huge publisher, well in Ireland (And its strange that I dont mention it more given that I live here) Bebo.com is the king of the jungle. Everyone is on Bebo it seems sometimes.
But there is more to onli… -

Bloggorah is a GREAT site. So what if its a copy? I’m sure people said the same thing when The Irish Times, Blurring Keys, RTE started out. Its Gawker Irish-style - and it makes up for John Ryan’s involvment with Stars on Sunday and VIP!
-
Cian, it’s not that the journos “listen to more voices”. it’s the cogging of entire articles without credit that can get objectionable
Anyway — Blogorrah — fantastic. I love it! -

If nobody copied anyone else then we wouldn’t have anything!!! i don’t see the problem. And for those people saying that there is too many of those skits and comments on the model-stephens green-dodgy photos well then your wrong! Haven’t you ever wondered why there is so many of these stupid photos in the Irish media!! havent you ever been at home slagging them off!!! bloggrah is there to show that your not alone.

(I’ve posted this to a reply on another site, it works here too…)
So, they copied the idea, and before Gawker recently done a redesign Blogorrah.com was a near identical copy. So, what.
I was merely pointing out such. And for ever person who says “everyone know that’, there’s another who says “sure nobody in Ireland has ever seen Gawker”.
Have record companies [or maybe school (memory) tests] made us think that any use of the word ‘copy’ has to be negative?
Anyway, the copying stuff was really only fluff compared to the substance, which was aggregation of the Sunday Times report that there’s more to come from Ryan. -
