Trinity College Dublin won eight of 31 categorises at the Irish Student Media Awards / Smedias last night at the Mansion House in Dublin, including the top awards of editor and newspaper of the year.

In terms of crude numbers, Trinity’s win compares to four for UCD — The two largest third level colleges in Ireland typically take home the most wins. Trinity managed to out do the DCU which has a large communication and journalism focused school, the north side university only managed to take away three awards. NUI Galway and DIT both picked up four wins.

The other winners included: Griffith (2), Ballyfermot College of Further Education (2), Institute of Art Design and Technology (1) Letterkenny Institute of Technology (1), and Queens University Belfast (1).

Also of note, the winners were heavily male-dominated with few of the 31 awards going to female students.

UPDATE: The winners for 2009 3 Student Media Awards, Smedias, are now here.

The nominations for the 2008 Smedia awards - the Irish student media awards - have been announced.

Although the nominees in three categories have yet to be revealed, the vast majority are available at the organiser's website, oxygen.ie.

The awards take place on Tuesday night at Tripod in Dublin.

Why aren’t Irish student newspapers online? Few have sites with content pages, a few more with just PDFs, others with out-of-date PDFs, and more with no working website at all.

In an update to our previous post on the 2007 3 Smedia awards, the awards section at oxygen.ie was updated, the closing date for entrees is now shown as March 5.

Submissions for the main Irish student media awards ‘the 3 Smedia’ awards are due before the online closing date of February 19, with the awards event on March 27.

Judges are media professionals in different areas such as editors, writers, and presenters. The Smedia awards are organised by student website oxygen.ie and are sponsored by most Irish national newspapers as well as national broadcasters.

Two new categories for this year are ‘Sports photographer of the year’ and ‘Television production in Irish - documenatary and drama’. While other categories range from ‘Newspaper of the year’ to ‘Short story of the year’, from ‘TV journalist of the year’ to ‘Film script of the year’.
